Hi Friends!

Vince and I will be doing a wee show at the Tranzac Club in Toronto on Wednesday, December 5. 

The club is located at 292 Brunswick Ave.   We'll be in the Southern Cross Lounge from 7:30 to 9:30pm. 

Come in from the cold and cosy up with a pint or two and some homemade tunes!

We will be adding a couple of Christmas songs to the mix, just for fun.  Maybe there will even be snow!

I love this time of year....

We'd love to see you at the Tranzac!

My Mom recently came across some artwork from my kindergarten days that she had tucked away. 

It was a bit of an emotional experience for me to see these paintings made by my happy four-year-old self.  Those innocent, hopeful, brightly coloured brush strokes -  rainbow dresses, big smiling faces, hand-holding families; smiling suns and clouds and birds and horses and rabbits.  Even smiling umbrellas!   

It made me sad to realize that I have lost the unselfconsciousness, the hopefulness, the uninhibited joyfulness of these paintings. Somewhere along my journey into adulthood, I became mired in doubt and self-judgment and fear.

It is in my nature to tend towards the negative side of things, and I have had to fight against this tendency for many years.  I have always had trouble writing happy song lyrics - deeming them "cheesy", or weak, or boring and scrapping them shortly after their birth. It is difficult for me to write or draw or create without self-doubt and self-censorship.

These paintings are a good reminder -  I would never criticize a child's creative renderings - so why am I so hard on my own?

So, to honour my four-year-old self - my inner child - I am going to try to write a happy song.  Without judgment, without censorship.

I owe it to that joyful little girl.
