There are so many wonderful moments that happen during Buskerfest, but one that stands out for me happened the day after the festival ended, as staff and performers were clearing out of the Green Room for the last time. During the festival, one of my favourite acts - Australian performance artists Surreal McCoy - dressed as giant seagulls and made their way through the crowds on the street, in shops and at the St. Lawrence Market. They ogled the market's fish counters, stole french fries and popcorn, went through people's bags and pockets, and generated delight wherever they appeared.
On the last day, as I was getting my bike from the Green Room, a woman standing next to me tightened the straps on her big suitcase and surveyed the room to make sure everything was packed and ready to go. Because she had been in costume during the fest, I didn't recognize her as one of the giant seagulls until, satisfied that all was ready, she nodded her head once, saluted, and signed off with "Seagulls... out!" Vince and I have decided that more people need to use that phrase in their daily lives. So.... until next Buskerfest..... Seagulls... OUT! H. xo |
